Finished the linocut with the addition of a final dark to bring out the structure of the bedding planes in the rocks.

Nearly Finished

Colour 8, a dark purple grey, the  base colour for the shadowed area of rocks.

Colour 9 is a dark blue for the shadowed areas of the far headland only.

Colour 10, another dark grey.

Colour 11. A dark green for the shadowed foreground grasses.

Colour 12, a second darker grey.
One final dark to go now to bring out the detail in the structure of the rocks.

Linocut progress

I was right, this will take longer than a week. Four more colours down and now we are getting somewhere.

Colour 4. A brownish grey to provide the base colour for the cliff face. I've only inked up the right hand side of the block, I don't want any of this colour in the sea.

Colour 5. A light green. At some point during every print there comes a time when everything just looks a right mess....and this is it. With hindsight I should have printed this before the brown.

Colour 6 is a blended roll of a blue green through to light blue.

the ink is still wet so there is a lot of glare in this photo but now everything is starting to pull back together.

Colour 7 is a further dark blue to finish off the sea. I am pleased with the effect of sunlight on the cliffs on the right of the picture. This wasn't planned for and is totally unexpected but now it's there I want to develop it further. Just not sure how yet.

This weeks project

I suspect this may take longer than a week. Another print based on sketches from last summer's holiday on the Cardiganshire Coast.

Colour 1. A warm grey. The drawing has offset from the block but will be covered by the later colours. So much for permanent markers!

Colour 2. A cooler, blue grey.

Colour 3 is a blend from blue green to light blue across the block.

and printed. Trying to get some movement into the water. Not sure where I'm going next. I haven't decided if I'm going to put one more blue on the sea or start to deal with the large solid block on the right. There are some light shapes to go onto the right which I should put in before it all starts getting too dark.

What I did on my holidays

Started this on Friday morning and finished it this afternoon

Block cut and inked for colour 1

Colour 1 printed. Trust me there is something on this piece of paper. A very pale blend of cool to warm then back to cool cream.

Block cut and inked for colour 2. A dark to pale blue blend from top to bottom.

Colour 2 and 3 printed. I forgot to photograph colour 2 on its own. Colour 3 is a pale yellow brown printed across the birds breastband and head only.

Colour 4. A second slightly darker blue.

Block inked for colour 5.

Colour 5 printed. A blue grey.

Colour 6. A dark blue for the deep shadows in the birds underwing.

Colour 7. A mid brown for the plumage markings.

Block cut and inked for Colour 8, the final dark.

Colour 8. A final dark brown and the print is finished and still wet hence the glare from some of the wet ink.
