"The artist...is also a born adventurer. His explorations, unlike those of a tourist, are rewarded by the discovery of beauty spots unmentioned in the guide books, and with tireless curiosity and an exceptional proneness to wonderment, he will come upon objects of remarkable interest overlooked or even shunned by more disciplined observers."

Augustus John, R.A.

Chapel print

Five more colours down and the latest print is almost finished.

Colour 3 . Light Blue

Colour 4. Light Green.

Colour 5. Light Grey, this colour is actually lighter in tone than the green and should really have been printed before it.

Colour 6. A brownish grey to introduce some variety into the stonework.

Colour 7. A dark green. A couple of more darker tones and the print should be finished.

Making a start

The first two colours on the new print. After doing snow scenes for the last couple of prints, this one will have spring greens in it. First colour above, is a pale ochre colour. Followed by an orange brown below.

Finishing Off

Next colour is a darker tone of the ochre brown printed earlier and then ....

....the first green, followed by a darker green

and then the final darks to add depth to the shadows on the spruce tree and the bushes on the left.

Not much to see yet

A new block inked up and ready for the first colour.

Colour One, a pale cream, with enough of the drawing offset from the block to give some idea of the composition.

Colour Two is the above colour with the addition of a very small amount of Cadmium Red to give a pale peach/pink colour.

Colour Three, again is the above colour with the addition of a little purple.

Colour Four, a light blue completes the sky and adds shadows on to the distant hillside. Another snow scene based on my winter sketches from the moors above Holmfirth.

Colour Five, a light brown for patches of moorland showing through the snow on the windblown areas of the moor.

Colour Six, a purplish colour for the distant woodands and base colour for the foreground road.

Colour Seven, slightly darker tone of the above colour for texture on the road surface, to give form to the distant trees and shadow for the foreground tree on the right.

Back on track

Only a few more colours to put the finishing touches on this print. Which for a snow scene has become a lot more complicated than I originally intended.

I've added a darkish brown grey onto the foreground wall and to give some form to the reservoir overflow tower and distant woodland. And lastly a final dark onto the foreround wall and tree.

Dithering

Had a bit of a hiccup with the latest print, mainly due to going too dark too soon.

This greyish green although right for the moorland grasses showing through the snow, is way too dark for the lake in the foreground. The water was frozen with a slight dusting of snow across the surface of the ice, with a few blue melt water pools reflecting the sky. After cutting away the areas of colour that I wanted to keep I re-inked the block with a paler grey.

Still too dark so I tried again.

Better this time. Although still darker than I wanted, so I cut some shapes out of it  and printed again with a paler grey.

This is closer to the effect that I intended. I was tempted to play around with it again but decided to leave it as it is and moved on to the next colour.

A brown for the woodland on the hillside beyond the lake.
